When someone nearby searches “tailor near me” or “best sweet shop in my area”, Google shows a map with a few businesses on top. Those businesses get the calls, the directions requests and the walk-in customers. The good news: getting listed there is free. All you need is a Google Business Profile that is complete and active. Here is a simple step-by-step guide for small shop owners and service providers in India.
1. Create or claim your profile
Go to google.com/business and sign in with the Gmail account you use for your business. Search for your business name. If it already appears (customers sometimes add it), claim it. If not, add it fresh. Choose the most accurate primary category, for example “Grocery store”, “Beauty parlour” or “Computer repair service”. The category matters a lot for which searches you show up in.
2. Verify your business
Google will ask you to verify that you really run the business. Depending on your business, this may be a phone or SMS code, an email, a short video showing your shop signboard and premises, or a postcard. Until you verify, your edits may not show publicly, so finish this step first.
3. Fill in every detail
- Name: use your real signboard name. Don’t stuff keywords into it, as Google can suspend profiles for that.
- Address and map pin: check that the pin sits exactly on your shop. If you visit customers at home, you can hide the address and set a service area instead.
- Phone and WhatsApp: add a number that is actually answered during working hours.
- Opening hours: include holiday hours for Durga Puja, Diwali and other festivals so customers don’t arrive to a closed shutter.
- Description: two or three plain sentences on what you sell, who you serve and what makes you different.
4. Add real photos
Profiles with photos get noticeably more clicks than profiles without them. Add a clear photo of your shop front (so people recognise it from the road), the inside, your best products and, if you’re comfortable, you and your team. Take them in daylight with your phone, and add a few new ones every month.
5. Collect and reply to reviews
Reviews are one of the strongest signals for both Google and customers. From your profile, copy your “Ask for reviews” link and send it on WhatsApp to happy customers right after a sale or service. Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and briefly. A calm, helpful reply to a complaint often impresses new customers more than a dozen five-star ratings. Never buy fake reviews; it can get your profile removed.
6. Post updates and offers
Your profile lets you publish short updates: a new stock arrival, a festive discount or an event. Posting once a week shows Google that your business is active, and it gives searchers a reason to choose you today. Keep each update short, with one photo and a clear action like “Call now” or “Get directions”.
7. Answer questions and check your insights
Customers can ask questions on your profile, and anyone can answer them, so answer first and answer correctly. Then once a month, open the performance section to see how many people searched for you, called you or asked for directions. If calls drop, refresh your photos, ask for a few more reviews and post an offer.
Quick checklist
- Profile claimed and verified
- Correct category, address pin, phone and hours
- At least 10 good photos
- Review link shared with every happy customer
- One update posted every week
A Google Business Profile costs nothing but an hour of setup and ten minutes a week. For a local shop or service business, it is one of the easiest ways to turn online searches into real customers at your door.
